Gap year travellers may do their bit for the environment while they're at home, but what about during their trip?
According to a survey by holidaylettings.co.uk, it's all too easy to forget about being eco-friendly when you're having the time of your life.
The research shows that just 1.5 per cent of people consciously opt for green accommodation, while 77 per cent associate offsetting the carbon footprint of their break with financial burdens and therefore choose not to.
Indeed, many of those who responded to the survey claimed to have other priorities, which may not be surprising in the current economic climate.
However there are some things travellers can do to minimise the impact of their gap year on the environment, such as recycling their waste, taking showers instead of baths and switching off air conditioning units when not required.
The holidaylettings.co.uk survey follows a similar poll by independent UK charity the Travel Foundation, which revealed that while 90 per cent of people recycle regularly in their day-to-day lives, less than half do so when they go abroad.
