Taking a gap year abroad should not be all about going somewhere familiar, but is instead about trying out new adventures and getting off the beaten track.
Managing director of Conde Nast Nicholas Coleridge has urged those considering taking a gap year abroad to make sure they choose somewhere that is "thrilling and adventurous", reports the London Evening Standard.
"Don’t just go where everyone else goes, tempting as it is. Grab your chance for an adventure while you’ve got it," he urged.
One suggestion he has is to take a gap year in South Africa or India, as this would prove to be more memorable experience and provide a better talking point in later life than lounging on a beach.
Another way of enjoying your gap year abroad to the full, Mr Coleridge concluded, is to get in touch with home when necessary, but "please don’t ring England every day".
South Africa has a string of admirers, including celebrity funnyman Frank Skinner and Springwatch presenter Simon King.
