London couple travel the world in 300 days A couple from London has managed to make their way around the world in 300 days – without using a single airport

Eco-conscious travel enthusiasts Tom Fewins, aged 32 and Lara Lockwood, 30, set off together last June and traversed some of the world’s most famous landscapes since then using boats and trains rather than planes.

The pair also started a blog which they discovered had won the Lonely Planet Best Travelogue 2009 award when they returned and was attracting 14,000 readers daily, reports the Hornsey and Crouch End Journal.

Among the adventures the two experienced were riding on trains in Russia, meeting elephants in Laos and playing the banjo in North Carolina.

"We watched the world change slowly around us as we headed east and came up across all manner of delights which perhaps we wouldn’t have found if we had flown," Tom explained.

Taking a trip and volunteering abroad to avoid the dreariness of recession could be a great way to boost your life experiences and CV, the universities minister David Lammy told the BBC this week.
