Kangaroo Island, which is located in the south of Australia, has been named as an essential place to visit by Tourism Australia’s National Landscapes programme and is the only destination to have been singled out by the organisation this year.
The announcement was made at the Australian Tourism Exchange and outlined Kangaroo Island as one of the best places for those on a gap year in Australia to go to should they want to get face-to face with wildlife.
"More and more, tourists are looking for clean, green and environmentally responsible travel experiences and Kangaroo Island delivers in spades," explained the tourism minister Jane Lomax-Smith.
She added that the island boasts pristine landscapes, an abundance of indigenous wildlife and stated that more than one-third is reserved for conservation parks.
Kangaroo Island, which is seven times the size of Singapore, can be reached by boat from Adelaide and is home to penguins, kangaroos, wallabies, koalas, New Zealand fur seals and Australian sea lions.
