Those on a gap year looking for a weekend retreat during their travels might want to stop off in a region of India.
Santiniketan in west Bengal has been recommended for such a purpose by Suite 101.com writer Chayanika Sen.
The journalist described the destination as the ideal breakaway from the hustle and bustle of city life.
Its main attractions for budding tourists are the green forest of casuarina and the devil’s tree, the red soil and the Kopai River, the journalist noted.
She commented: "Santiniketan is truly the abode of peace and a perfect weekend getaway for city dwellers."
One of the best sights to see in the region, according to Ms Sen, is the Mandir, or The Glass Prayer House, which is made of colourful cut glass and is a work of "divine beauty".
Fellow Suite101.com contributor Suzanna Hulmes recently advised travellers in the country to head for Varanasi as it is a city with plenty to offer, such as walks along the River Ganges.
