Iceberg spotting ''hottest new pastime on gap year in New Zealand'' Icebergs drifting around the coast of New Zealand are providing visitors and those on gap years abroad with some spectacular and breathtaking views, it has been asserted.

The glaciers, which have been adrift in the south Pacific in recent times, have prompted helicopter firms to charge visitors around NZ$600 (£260) for an aerial view of the natural wonders, reports the Times.

According to the newspaper, firms have been snowed under with requests from travellers since the news broke that the icebergs, thought to have drifted in from Antarctica, were sailing past the country.

Graeme Gale, who runs Helicopter Otago on New Zealand‘s south island, told the publication: "It’s like nothing you’ve ever seen before. They are all different. Some have got ponds, some have waterfalls and the colour of the ice is a beautiful turquoise."

This news comes after Whale Watch Kaikoura of New Zealand was named the world’s most eco-friendly travel firm at the 2009 Virgin Holidays Responsible Tourism Awards.
