Ian Rankin: I''m off on a gap year abroad Although, due to his profession, crime writer Ian Rankin may be immune from the tight employment market, the Scot is considering heading off on a gap year abroad, he has revealed.

Inspired by his son – who has just left school – the author has admitted that now he is almost 50, a gap year abroad is starting to seem like an attractive option, according to the Telegraph.

The publication adds that increasing numbers of older Brits are opting to leave behind their worries and jet off to sunnier climes, often with their younger family members in tow.

"They may be of a generation that had no choice but to go straight to university from school or find a job because of lack of funds," the news provider explains.

Some of Ian Rankin’s titles include Exit Music, Knots and Crosses, the Falls and a Question of Blood.
