Posted 27 Apr 2009

Hunt down the best of Africa by volunteering abroad in Zanzibar Zanzibar – one of Africa’s most diverse, interesting and undiscovered islands – could be the ideal place to volunteer abroad and escape the doom and gloom of the recession at home.

Located just off the east coast of Africa, Zanzibar has played host to a wide variety of settlers in the past – including the Dutch, Indians, Chinese and Portuguese – giving it a unique cultural heritage waiting to be explored.

Those considering a sabbatical from the office, a gap year or giving something back by volunteering abroad, could journey to the island with i-to-i’s teaching project, based in Stone Town.

Combining the rewards of teaching youngsters from the local community with free time to explore Stone Town’s bazaars, picturesque world heritage sites and sweeping beaches, Zanzibar could provide the perfect getaway for rain-soaked Brits.

One recent high-profile visitor to the shores of Africa was Christian Slater, who travelled to the Ulusaba region to see a completed classroom he has been supporting through Virgin Unite.
