Golden Oldies surf the net, explains Age Concern

Posted 16 Dec 2008

For many old people, the internet has opened up new opportunities to enjoy life and stop the feeling of isolation, a spokesperson from Age concern has said.

Monica Evans explains that OAPs see the web as an attractive tool to use because it allows them to take their time in finding out information and decision making.

She said: "Many older users say the internet has changed their lives for the better and the annual Silver Surfer awards bear testimony to the enjoyment and learning older people can derive from technology."

Searching on the internet could help exercise and improve brain function, a University of California study has suggested, as it engages it in complex activity.

Around three quarters of OAPs who log onto the web have taught themselves how to use it, according to the independent online travel agent Sunshine.

As well as using it to book holidays, some also use it to do the majority of their shopping and to do internet banking.

Those who enjoy using the internet to learn new skills may enjoy completing an online TEFL course.ADNFCR-1944-ID-18932855-ADNFCR
