Students planning to spend their third year of university overseas should ensure they have the correct insurance policies before travelling, one expert warns.
Lizzie Fane, founder of ThirdYearAbroad.com, stresses the importance of obtaining the appropriate cover prior to jetting off, explaining that this can help to avoid "shock expenses".
"Choosing a policy which offers cancellation cover will waylay the expense of unforeseen strikes and delays before and during travel," she comments, adding that getting 12 months of cover can be a good idea too.
She notes that in doing so, students can work in a summer job to bookend their studies, which can help to improve their language skills.
Meanwhile, recent research from Sainsbury's Travel Insurance highlighted that the average cost of a medical claim has risen to over £1,000 – something that may further encourage holidaymakers to secure the comprehensive cover before starting their journey.
