Those embarking upon gap year travel who have taken out backpacking insurance have been warned to take heed of new border control measures adopted by US immigration.
American border control has now implemented a system by which those wishing to gain entry into the US must fill out an online form, or Esta, at least 72 hours before travel.
However, if gap year travellers fail to do this and are refused entry into the country, backpacking insurance will not offer them protection, according to EssentialTravel.co.uk.
Insurance director for the firm Stuart Bensusan explained: "Anyone who forfeits their holiday – flight, accommodation, cruise etc – because they don’t have an Esta, won’t be able to claim on their travel insurance."
Taking a gap year abroad is becoming a more popular option among Brits, it has been claimed. The Telegraph reported this week that various volunteering abroad organisations have reported an increase in enquiries and participants of late.
