It is no longer enough for those on a gap year abroad to simply sit back and relax in the sun. Rather, they are looking to better themselves and achieve something positive while they are away.
This is according to Sharron Livingston, editor at thetravelmagazine.net, who believes that holidaymakers and gap year travellers are seeking something a little bit different when they head off on their travels.
She stated: "Culture, adventure, activity and learning holidays offer time out with a feeling of having done something worthwhile – plus these experiences are great for […] conversation."
These are also the kind of experiences offered by volunteering abroad projects of which there is a vast array to choose from.
Meanwhile, according to a poll conducted by travelsupermarket.com this week, 38 per cent of Brits want to go on a safari, while 36 per cent would love to swim through the sea alongside a dolphin.
Jungle trekking, panda watching and observing gorillas and orang-utans were other ambitions harboured by respondents.
