Gap year travellers ‘should take out insurance’

Posted 12 Mar 2010

Gap year travellers ''should take out insurance'' Gap year travellers might want to be extra cautious and ensure they are adequately protected abroad by taking out insurance, an industry expert has advised.

Ian Bradley, spokesman for the Association of Independent Tour Operators, especially recommended the measure for those planning more adventurous excursions.

He said that the step was vital for "any out-of-the-ordinary activities travellers might undertake during a trip".

Mr Bradley continued by stating that "comprehensive" cover should be purchased in order to blanket "most eventualities".

His comments come following reports that the Caribbean island of Cuba is demanding foreign entrants to provide documentation proving they have adequate medical insurance before being allowed entry to the country.

Statistics released by Lloyds TSB Added Value Accounts at the beginning of March showed that 35.6 million Britons will be heading overseas for their main vacation in 2010, a figure in contrast to the previous year’s staycation trend – where many people restrained from flying abroad.
