Gap Year travellers ‘prioritise healthcare insurance’

Posted 10 Feb 2009

Gap Year travellers ''prioritise healthcare insurance'' Those about to embark upon gap year travel are more concerned about healthcare insurance than that protecting their possessions, it has been discovered.

A poll conducted by Medicare International discovered that 80 per cent of respondents said that healthcare protection is their number one purchase before taking a gap year.

However, Private Healthcare UK has reported that sometimes individuals are inconvenienced when they find that the policies they have opted fo do not cover them sufficiently.

Medicare International’s David Pryor stated: "Our view is that gap year students might be better served avoiding hybrid policies by buying specialist medical insurance and keeping travel and possessions cover separate."

He added that healthcare claims "have the potential to spiral out of control" compared to belongings insurance, so gap year travellers should ensure that they choose the one that is right for them.

Meanwhile, Sian Williams, from the site Trivago advised those going abroad that they can find a large variety of deals at various prices on the internet.
