Travellers planning to drive during their gap years abroad have been offered some road safety advice from ABTA – The Travel Association.
The group is urging motorists to take sensible precautions when travelling by car overseas and to make sure they fully understand local driving laws.
Nikki White, head of destinations and sustainability, pointed out that although the chances of being involved in a road traffic accident while on holiday are small, serious collisions can and do occur.
She advised travellers to use reputable car hire companies and to check up on safety standards before getting into a rented vehicle.
Insurance checks may also be important to make sure drivers are properly covered should they have an accident.
Many countries drive in the right hand side of the road, as opposed to the left, but speed limits, motorway lane use and other driving rules can all differ depending on where backpackers are travelling.
