Gap year travellers ‘need to mix it up’

Posted 29 Jan 2010

Gap year travellers ''need to mix it up'' A dilemma that many gap year travellers will face before they leave for their adventures is the question of how to carry the money that they will need along the way.

Providing some insight into the subject, Sarah Munro, head of travel services at the Post Office, advised globetrotters to take a mix of plastic and cash, both of which will serve them well in many eventualities.

"It is important to carry some cash to pay for taxis and drinks and in many destinations it will be needed to buy goods," Ms Munro explained.

She added that a surprising number of people attempt to pay with cards in small establishments abroad and wonder why they are not accepted.

As well as cash and credit and debit cards, prepaid top-ups can be useful, as they can be operated online and used widely, the expert recommended.

According to research from Santander published earlier this week, 52 per cent of all Britons travelling take cash on their travels as a main method of payment. ADNFCR-1944-ID-19588087-ADNFCR
