Gap year travellers can enjoy ''great wildlife encounters in Brazil'' Backpackers travelling through Brazil might wish to explore the country’s array of wildlife as it has been praised by a travel writer.

Mike Unwin, reporting for the Independent, ventured deep into the nation’s heart to catch a glimpse of South America’s ‘big five’ – the giant anteater, jaguar, tapir, maned wolf and giant river otter – yet found plenty of other animal life to keep him fascinated in between.

He summarised: "Whatever your agenda, if it’s simply a ruse to explore Brazil‘s extraordinary wildlife riches, you won’t be disappointed."

Mr Unwin trekked through the Amazon jungle and across the wetlands of the Pantanal during his search for the animals, but admitted the trip would have been memorable even without seeing them, such was the assortment of riches available.

Eager travellers may also like to note that the 2010 Wildlife Worldwide Festival of Wildlife is set to take place in Pantanal in September.
