Gap year in India: Discover the Onam Festival Travellers taking a gap year in India could be among those to join in the festivities taking place in Kerala this month.

Starting on August 24th, the Onam Festival celebrates a mythical ruler of Kerala, King Mahabali.

As part of the festivities, each town and village celebrates in its own way, but visitors can expect to see boat races, dancing, singing and colourful processions.

Travellers exploring Cheruthuruthy could see traditional Kathakali dancers, while those in Aranmulai and Kottayam might watch the Snake Boat Race – also known as Vallamkali – which sees rowers race large boats under brightly decorated umbrellas.

Nine-course feasts and games are also prominent features of Onam.

Typically lasting four to ten days, the festival is regarded as one of the most important in the state and overseas visitors are encouraged to travel to Kerala during this time to take part in the celebrations.
