Travellers planning a gap year in Ghana could find that visiting Accra is a good place to start, if the comments of one expert are anything to go by.
According to Bradt author Philip Briggs, Accra is a "gateway" to other destinations in the country.
However, he notes that the location has attractions of its own.
"Accra is obviously a more historic city than most of these in Eastern or Southern Africa," Mr Briggs adds.
Among the places visitors may like to see, he suggests, is Kaneshie market, as well as the Jamestown area, which boasts a lighthouse, old fort and busy fishing harbour.
Earlier this year, Accra achieved 20th position in TripAdvisor Travellers' Choice 2011 top destination awards.
It was the only Ghanian destination to make it into the top 25 spots – and the firm recommended visiting sites such as Bojo Beach and the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park.
