A boat trip along the Mekong Delta could be the ideal recreation for adventurous gap year travellers in Vietnam.
This is according to Suite101.com, which has lauded the transport method as a great way to experience the country’s most interesting inhabitants, cultures and food.
The region is unique, it reports, not only because of the vast number of different animal and fish species that call the place home, but also due to the way the locals have adapted to life on the water.
One such aspect is the collection of floating markets that line the river, where visitors can purchase an assortment of goods, ranging from fresh food to coffins.
They are usually open from 05:00 local time to 11:00 so it may be best to stay overnight, the portal advises.
Earlier in the month, Vietnam was voted as the second-best emerging destination in the 2010 Virtuoso Luxe Report, just behind India but ahead of Cuba.
