Those considering a well-earned rest after years of employment could use the skills they have developed throughout their working lives to gain a unique insight into a country by volunteering abroad.
Older generations are healthier and fitter than ever before and much more inclined to opt for a life-changing adventure after retirement, according to Lauren Mackay, marketing manager for Real Gap.
However, volunteering abroad is not just about labour and all work, no play.
Companies such as i-to-i present a vast range of options, from teaching English in orphanages in South Africa, to helping children learn circus tricks in Rio or a month-long project in Thailand involving relaxation, sightseeing and several volunteering choices.
"There is a great deal of information and advice out there now for older people wanting to experience gap-type travel," Ms Mackay concluded.
So, what are you waiting for? Swap the armchair for weird and wonderful landscapes, see the places you’ve always dreamed of and give something back at the same time.
