Flood warnings to be delivered ‘via text’ in Bangladesh

Posted 26 Jun 2009

Flood warnings to be delivered ''via text'' in Bangladesh According to officials in Bangladesh, locals are being warned about the threat of forthcoming floods during monsoon season via the medium of text message.

This is a move which, they say, will help to save the lives of many in the low-lying area. An instant alert issued through a text message will inform Grameenphone and Teletalk subscribers about cyclones and floods and tell them where they can go for shelter.

Syed Ashraf, a communications specialist for the disaster management bureau, said that the scheme will "save people’s lives", the BBC informs.

"Flood victims will be able to take action like evacuate their homes and seek shelter in assigned places," the representative added.

Meanwhile, India is praying for rain at present as the current monsoon season is 68 per cent drier than average this year, according to reports.
