Although those on a gap year in China have no doubt had a giggle or two reading liberal interpretations of English on public signs, authorities in Shanghai plan to wage a war on incorrect notices, it has been revealed.

Bad, but often funny, translations of the English language in China, otherwise known as Chinglish, are to be cracked down upon by authorities, ahead of Shanghai’s hosting of the World Expo in 2010.

Numerous examples of signs being caught in cross-cultural confusion are available to browse online and occupy many a place in the photo albums of those who have taken a gap year in China.

One particular example the BBC highlights is a notice on the Shanghai metro reading: "If you are stolen, call the police at once."

The World Expo begins on May 1st and will last until October 31st next year. Organisers expect as many as 70 million people to attend the events and exhibitions on offer during this time.
