Fes: A cultural choice for gap year travel in Africa

Fes: A cultural choice for gap year travel in Africa Those looking for a cultural stop on the itinerary of their gap year travel in Africa might like to consider the Moroccan city of Fes.

Sharron Livingston, editor of Thetravelmagazine.net, believes the city is particularly popular due to the unspoiled, traditional face it presents.

With Business Monitor International recording a 14 per cent year-on-year growth in visitors during the first 11 months of 2007, Morocco is enjoying huge popularity, but Ms Livingston does not envisage this having an adverse effect on Fes.

"As [Fes’] culture and traditions are what pulls in the tourists, there is every incentive to preserve the character of the city," she said.

Gap year travellers will discover in Fes a city that is at the heart of cultural, religious and culinary life in Morocco.

There is also a multicultural influence here, with the modern Ville Nouvelle representing a European style in contrast to the old town, which has been recognised as a world heritage site by Unesco.
