Mombasa is a destination rich in historical sites, one expert has claimed.
Kenya Tourist Board UK director Angie Sloan highlights that the destination is packed with attractions holding a rich past, as well as cultural value.
Such comments could encourage gap year travellers to head to Mombasa as part of their trip.
Among the places she recommends visiting are the Hindu temples of Mombasa, which she says are "a highlight of the city and provide a fascinating insight into the diversity of Kenya's religious history".
Also suggesting tourists see Fort Jesus, she states "its monumental architecture is steeped in history and the fort houses a museum".
Built by the Portuguese, it was once associated with the slave trade, serving as a point of transit.
Ms Sloan also praises the friendliness of the destination, claiming it provides a relaxed atmosphere.
This could be one reason why Kenya has seen an upswing in arrivals. The country's tourist board recently revealed that the first quarter of 2011 saw a ten per cent year-on-year increase in visitors compared to 2010.
