Gap year travellers hoping to take their time exploring New Zealand's South Island could consider getting on the train.
In an article for the Telegraph newspaper, travel writer James Owen said travelling by rail is a great way to see the country.
He said the trains themselves offers a "glimpse of an older world" and are seen more as methods of enjoyment than modes of transport.
"Here, you travel by train for the journey, not to get somewhere," a tour guide told Mr Owen.
The journalist travelled from the harbour town of Picton to the city of Christchurch, passing orchards, vineyards and lakes on the way.
He said the journey had given him time to appreciate the beauty of New Zealand and to really relax and switch off from his everyday life at home.
"For the first time in many years I had had the time, and had felt the need, to reflect," he recollected. "I had taken life, like the train, at its own pace, and enjoyed it for what it showed me."
