Environmentally-friendly gap year travellers might soon want to head to Cambodia as plans have been laid down for Asia’s first eco-resort island in the country.

Scott Wilson – a design and engineering consultancy – has carried out an environmental survey of the island Koh Rong at the request of the Royal Group of Cambodia.

It is hoped the measure will lay the groundwork for what could be the first green resort destination in the continent.

The Koh Rong archipelago can be accessed via a 30-minute boat journey from the town of Sihanoukville and is being touted as the "next Asian Riviera", following in the footsteps of Phuket, Koh Samui and Bali.

It is 80 sq km in area and has a population of around 1,500 inhabitants, who live in small fishing villages.

Earlier in the month, travel reporter Mark Palmer recommended in the Daily Mail that travellers might want to head to Siem Reap and Angkor Wat in Cambodia for their historical significance.
