Travellers planning a gap year in China may be keen to visit Taiwan's first eco-tourism corridor, which has been launched in the south of the island.
Connecting four Aboriginal villages, the corridor will allow visitors to explore these areas, which were hit by a typhoon in August 2009.
The villages in Pingtung County give tourists the chance to see how these places have been rebuilt by local tribes.
Among the notable attractions are historical chieftain houses and sites associated with the destination's rich coffee heritage, which dates back to times of Japanese rule.
Alternatively, travellers keen to explore the north coast may be interested in the location's expanding cycle network.
The Sanzhi-Ximen route has just been launched, which will take visitors past scenic rock formations and white sand beaches – spots which the Taiwan Tourism Bureau notes are especially popular during the summer months.
