Dominican Republic ''great for nature lovers'' Nature lovers planning gap years may wish to add the Dominican Republic to their list of potential destinations.

According to the island nation's official tourism body, there are plenty of natural attractions to be discovered in the archipelago.

As well as being home to the highest peaks in the Caribbean, it also boasts some "fabulous" underwater scenery.

"The adventure-loving visitor has plenty to choose from – unique national parks to pristine ecosystems found nowhere else in the Caribbean," the body stated.

One of the most popular natural attractions in the Dominican Republic is Lake Enriquillo, which has such a high salt content that is inhospitable to humans but provides a thriving home for crocodiles.

Gap year travellers may also wish to visit the Bani Dunes, which are believed to be 50,000 years old, the Bahai de lad Aguilas, where pristine white sandy beaches stretch for miles, and the 40-metre-high Limon Waterfall.
