Two cousins that opted for volunteering abroad projects in Ghana and South Africa have described their experiences to their local newspaper.
Janelle Symons and Kirstie Arrol, both 19, told the Coventry Telegraph that volunteering abroad changed their outlook and even inspired one of them to consider attending university.
Kirstie headed for a reservation near Cape Town in South Africa, while Janelle, who spent time in the north Indian region of Himachal Pradesh, said that "it was amazing to see how people from a different culture live."
She continued: "We used to get 500 rupees to spend, about £5. I’ve made some good friends and it has given me the confidence to look at going to university which I never thought about before."
Volunteering abroad is being kept in the family of late, it seems. Twins Andrew and Charlotte Forbes recently told the Daily Mail about their respective gap year travels in Malawi and North Carolina.
