Could sunglasses be essential for gap year travellers?

Posted 22 Aug 2011

Could sunglasses be essential for gap year travellers? Sunglasses are far more than just a fashion accessory, one organisation argues, claiming that they are as important as sunscreen.

According to the College of Optometrists, protective eyewear is necessary in protecting against a range of conditions, such as cataracts and damage that can cause blindness.

Optometric advisor at the college Dr Susan Blakeney claims that it is particularly important for young people to give their eyes adequate protection.

Gap year travellers may therefore want to ensure they have the appropriate eyewear when travelling around the world – particularly when visiting sunny countries.

"It's just as important to cover your eyes from the sun as it is to protect your skin," comments Dr Blakeney, adding "they have an important role to play in protecting our eyes from harmful UV rays".

Recently, consumer watchdog Which? tested a variety of high-street sunglasses and found that 15 out of 21 pairs failed to meet the British Standard for these kinds of spectacles.
