People planning their gap years have been advised to check that their travel insurance policies provide them with adequate protection, according to one travel organisation.
Citing research undertaken by Age Concern, the Ski Club of Great Britain said that three-quarters of British travellers do not check the terms and conditions of their travel insurance policy.
Meanwhile, more than half (56 per cent) do not purchase any cover at all, which could leave them in a position where they have to foot the bill for medical expenditure or repatriation if they run into trouble.
The body recommended that people do not just opt for the policy that it cheapest, because it might not cover them for every activity they wish to take part in while on their travels – such as extreme or winter sports.
In recent days, moneysupermarket.com advised travellers to be aware of roaming charges from mobile phone companies when heading overseas.
