Volunteering in Cambodia can be a rewarding yet addictive endeavour, as proved by two Canadian students who now lead their own travelling exhibitions after trips to the country.
Jennifer Farquharson and Dan Couture – who both attend the University of Victoria – embarked on their first journey to Cambodia in 2007 before returning again in 2008 and have now begun to take charge of guiding others through similar adventures, according to the Martlet.
On their first outing to the south-east Asian country, the duo took part in a number of sustainable community development projects such as harvesting rice and repairing houses.
It has since inspired them to lead their own tours and this year, in association with Developing World Connection (DWC), they will escort students from Simon Fraser University and Thompson Rivers University to the village of Gashora in Rwanda.
DWC is a registered society from British Columbia, which was formed in 2004 and now serves in 12 countries across four continents.
