Cambodia is now a hugely-popular destination for people who are taking part in gap year travel, one publication has noted.
According to the Guardian, the country was perhaps most well-known for its "tragic histories" during the Cold War and under the rule of the Khmer Rouge regime.
However, the publication noted that it has emerged from the shadows of its past and become an important and much-loved destination for people taking gap years in Asia.
"It’s now a staple stop for travellers to the region, alongside Thailand, Laos and Vietnam but without so much of the tourist trappings in some of those countries," it asserted.
The publication said that "millions" of people visit regions such as Angkor Wat – which is a Unesco World Heritage Site – every year, but that the country has many other places of interest to visit, such as hidden beaches and "pristine" areas of jungle.
