Increasing numbers of Britons are deciding to stay in their host countries following the end of their gap year abroad, as reports of the tight job market are deterring them from returning home.
This is according to data from Projects Abroad, which says 130 of its volunteering abroad candidates have requested to remain at their projects, reports Scotland on Sunday.
"The prospect of gap year travellers returning to bleak employment prospects in Britain is not particularly exciting," explained Peter Slowe, founder of the firm.
He told the newspaper that in almost 20 years of operation, the company has never experienced this level of enthusiasm. "We have never seen young people basically not wanting to come back home," he added.
In related developments this week, more and more people are choosing to spend their redundancy pay on exploring new countries and volunteering abroad, according to gapyear.com.
