Gap year travellers spending time in Thailand will no doubt be visiting the country’s busy capital Bangkok.
Now there’s even more reason to go, as Travel and Leisure magazine has just named the metropolis as the winner of its Top City award.
The accolade was given to Bangkok in the August issue of the publication.
Travel and Leisure polled almost 16,000 readers between December and March, asking them to rate their favourite world cities.
Figures from the Tourism Authority of Thailand show that in the first half of the year, the number of tourists and gap year travellers visiting Thailand rose by almost 14 per cent compared to the same period in 2009.
Bangkok is usually high on the list of places to visit for most of those arriving in the country thanks to its cultural landmarks, its entertainment venues and its bustling markets.
Earlier this year, flights search engine Skyscanner listed the city in 11th place in its top 50 most searched for travel destinations.
