Those wondering where to head on their gap year may have Australia in mind, as the country is “perennially” popular as a travel destination for backpackers.
According to Cheapflights.co.uk, students and older travellers from the UK flock to both Australia and New Zealand every year.
The price comparison site listed the Antipodes in its recent run-down of the best places in the world to take a gap year.
It said the two countries offer the best of both worlds, since they have cultural similarities with the UK and there is no language barrier, yet they are different enough that travellers are eager to explore them.
“Working holiday visas are available if travellers wish to supplement their funds while they’re there, with bar work and fruit picking being common avenues of employment chosen,” Cheapflights.co.uk stated.
Rodney Harrex, general manager for the UK and Europe at Tourism Australia, said recently that working during an Australian gap year enables backpackers to enjoy a “richer” travelling experience and pick up some useful skills.
