APD ‘set to rise next week’

Posted 30 Oct 2009

APD ''set to rise next week'' Air Passenger Duty (APD) is set to rise from November 1st 2009, holidaymakers and gap year travellers have been advised.

Overall, extra charges fall into four categories.

First of all, those travelling in band A – making trips of less than 2,000 miles – will pay £11 APD in economy class and double this sum for all other classes.

Band B – flights between 2,001 and 4,000 miles – will see APD for economy rise to £45 and for business and first class £90.

Flights between 4,001 and 6,000 miles constitute band C and the ADP rate for this will be £50 in economy and £100 in premium class.

Lastly, those in band D, people flying more than 6,000 miles, will be taxed £55 in economy class and £110 for premium seats.

Further rises will be introduced in November 2010.

The tax has been slammed by many figures in the travel industry, including ABTA chief executive Mark Tanzer, who stated that it is likely to "place an even greater financial burden on families and others on tight budgets".
