True Life Stories - Volunteering Abroad

I plan to volunteer for 3 months next year. I've been looking into volunteer opportunities in South America and India primarily. My goal is to figure out the location I will be volunteering in by December, that way I can start on the next goal of securing funds and taking care of all other necessary details.

I've gotten a lot of pamphlets and brochures about the projects, but I haven't really heard any real life tales about volunteering abroad.

If you are out there reading this and you have been to a project in these regions, do you mind sharing some of your stories and/or tips with a fellow traveler? Where'd you go, how long were you there, how did you enjoy it?
