So after 2 years of Middle Eastern beachside living and culture and life in the sandy bubble that is Dubai I am home and ready for my next adventure. My ultimate adventure would start with a trip to South America. Ever since I was little I have dreamed of heading to the Latin shores and exploring every corner I could find, in particular the Galapagos Islands.
To plane-hop my way through South America is not the way for me. No. I want to trail ride my way around the continent, and where I can't take a horse then bus or boat will suffice, natch.
I would fly into Quito, Ecuador and take a week trail riding through the Andes before taking a boat to the Galapagos Islands. While on the Islands I would do a month of volunteer work either teaching English or marine conservation. After saving the world one syllable/turtle at a time, I would head back to the mainland and make my way to Peru. The trail ride through the Sacred Valley of the Inca would be the path for me and my Paso-Fino as we experience the wonder and intrigue of the Incas all the way to Machu Picchu. When I get to Chile, I would take a glacier trail through Torres del Paine National Park and Argentine Patagonia. I would ride the Andean crossing from Chile into Argentina and ride the "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" home lands, undertaking outdoor pursuits on the way.
The rich history and strong architecture of Buenos Aires have always called to me; and the posse of polo ranches are definitely a bonus. Although I have experience in most equestrian disciplines, polo is unchartered waters. As most of our riding club ponies were ex-polo ponies, polo lessons are a must even if only to experience the true potential of our own!
Uraguay will lead me on the "Painted Bird Trail". Fast paced and exhillerating....bring it on! Shoreside gallops along South Atlantic beaches all the while spotting exotic wildlife and having the experience I have dreamed of since I was a little Imp (as Grandpa called me). En route to the Pantanal, I will head to the most colourful city in the world, Rio de Janeiro, for a week of music, carnivals and unrivalled culture. The Pantanal Safari will take me on a trip through the Pantanal Wetlands and river beds in Brazil. As I begin to make my homeward journey, I would make my trip through the base of the Amazon jungle to Lima, where I would need to, sadly, head home.....obv to save some money ready for my next trip away from Blighty.
Hitting the Inca Trail, cattle driving in Patagonia, galloping along Uraguaean shores are all part of the dream trip, interspersed with volunteering in communities using my TEFL and learning and perfecting Spanish.
If anyone hasn't got bored yet of my dream-trip ramblings and has any tips of horse riding around South America please drop a comment in the box. Thanks!
