Day 1

Today I met the I-to-I in country coordinator Caroline and she told me all about Bali traditions, ceremonies, and the like. She also introduced t\me to Ketut, who runs the foundation for children, to which I am going tomorrow. I will stay in their guest accomodation during my time with the foundation, which means I will be on hand to become very involved with the children throughout the days. I have been informed I will be the only volunteer currently visiting the foundation and that my help is most important to the running. For this I am very scared, lol. Meanwhile it seems I will be most involved with teaching the older children how to use the internet (Hmm I wonder how they get the idea I might be any good at that:-) ) Goodness I really hope I don't accidentally go on any wrong sites by mistake. Think how bad that would be.

After spending a short while talking with Ketut and Caroline, Caroline took me on a tour of Ubud. OK, now comes the scary part - remember the crazy mopeds I mentioned yesterday...Yes, you have guessed it. I was on the back of one. Oh my goodness!!! It was not as scary actually being on the bike as it was being a pedestrian, or worse still a car passenger though I must say. The wind was cool on my face, which was totally refreshing as I had thought yesterday was hot. I cannot imagine the temperature today. The sun is shining brightly and it is so humid I continually feel like I have just stepped out of the shower and not yet dried myself, lol. Caroline took me to the local Birthing Centre so I may donate the knitted offerings from home that friends of the Rosie Maternity Unit (Cambridge) had made. These were received very kindly, and said to be most useful for mothers who live in the mountanous regions where the temperature can become quite cold at times. I was introduced to a wonderful American Lady who helps to run the centre. I was shown the birthing rooms and explained the process, and then got to meet to new gorgeous bundles of joy who were only hours old. What a privilege. Caroline then took me on to a cafe (care for Downs Syndrome children) where we ate a traditional Indonesian lunch, and then on to one of the many beautiful Temples here in Bali, before a brief visit of the restaurant that featured in the movie Eat Pray Love!!!

This afternoon I have taken myself down to the Monkey Forest, enjoying the cooler air of being in the shaded trees for a while, and then a stroll through the streets of Ubud, in a different direction. I find myself back here at another internet cafe telling my story of a fun packed day and yet it is only 4.42pm. Wow the days seem to really slow here.

I remain apprehensive about what is to come but excited too, and already feel I am learning so much from this wonderful culture. People are very friendly and not at all intrusive. I am made to always feel very welcome.
