i-to-i’s Journal

What not to wear on your i-to-i adventure

We’ve all been there – you’ve got your flights, visas and vaccinations all sorted, but there’s just one problem… your empty backpack/suitcase staring back up at you. What the hell are you going to wear?! Well, while each i-to-i trip is different, here are some dos and don’ts that might help you decide what to take and what to leave in your wardrobe…

Do

Wear a hat if you’re going somewhere hot – sunstroke is not especially chic

Wear trousers and long sleeves in the evening if you’re staying in a area affected by malaria – getting ill is another thing that’s not especially chic, so cover up to avoid becoming dinner for mosquitoes

Pack old clothes – fashion’s loss is practicality’s gain, and you won’t feel upset if your favourite t-shirt gets something unspeakable spilt down it!

Try to keep tattoos covered up – in some cultures they’re synonymous with gangs

Bring a sarong with you – it’s great for covering up when you’re at the beach or visiting temples

Don’t

Drench yourself in perfume or aftershave if you’re working with animals – it can end up bothering them!

Expose too much flesh – especially if you want to be respected and don’t want a shed-load of unwanted attention!

Bring your straighteners with you – let go! You’ll soon realise there’s more to life than hair!

Pack white clothes – it’s not a colour that mixes well with travel!

Remember, if you ever have questions about what’s suitable to wear at your project, or just questions about your trip in general, you can always get in touch with our friendly Customer Support team on the Customer Support Campfire: http://www.i-to-i.com/campfire/groups/317-Customer-Support-.

I don't have a disaster story (except expecting all hotels to have washcloths) but, something I would never again leave home without is my comfy casual black Aerosole sandals. I am NOT a shoe person, but with all the walking typical of any vacation, having a good all-around pair of shoes would be my personal advice to anyone. I wore my Aerosoles all over Europe! Oh, and something light to cover hair/shoulders in those conservative places.

3 weeks in Morocco, Spain, Portugal and unseasonably cold temperatures, only 1 long sleeve purple shirt, I think all of my photos have this shirt in them!

6 weeks of U.S., Mexico and Caribbean travel, one blue dress (intended). It went salsa dancing in Mexico, partying at Jay-Z's VMA afterparty in NYC, grubbin' with jerk chicken in Jamaica, and it survived the 1.5 million bats in Austin, Texas being guano-free!

I once wore a cap into the Minster in York, The Preist told me off!! How was i supposed to know you wernt aloud i was about 12 yrs old on a school trip.

When I was in Rome (about 6 yrs ago) I wanted to visit the St. Peter's Cathedral, but I was wearing shorts so I couldn't go in, felt really sad about that!

lovely. When I went to pakistan for a family holiday aged 14 (pre 9/11, but even so is not on my list of top trips ever) and wasn't particuarly enlightened when it came to just how much you needed to cover up. So my top fashion disaster was walking around with bare arms and uncovered hair in rural pakistan. Nice move.

I once jumped in a Swimming pool and my shorts slipped down abit! Quite funny!
