i-to-i have today launched a spectacular new project which sees travellers juggle enriching the lives of underprivileged kids at a circus project with experiencing the party capital of the world: Rio De Janeiro!
While a circus may seem like an unlikely place to make a difference, it’s a space where at-risk kids can develop new skills and where their achievements, however small, are valued and praised. By getting marginalised and street kids involved in circus activities, the project, Circo Baixada, aims to reintegrate them back into the local community.
To achieve this, however, the project needs plenty of volunteers who are buzzing with energy and enthusiasm! The volunteers, who take part in i-to-i’s Work in a circus with underprivileged children in Rio project (http://www.i-to-i.com/volunteer-projects/work-in-a-circus-rio-brazil.html), help lively young Cariocas develop their potential by getting them involved with fun circus activities, including juggling and tight-rope walking. Volunteers also get their creative juices flowing as they help out at theatre and dance classes. As well as the practical help they offer, volunteers are highly valued for the fresh ideas they inject into the project and the cultural exchange opportunities they offer, giving kids an insight into what’s outside of the favelas in which they live.
By helping out at this action-packed project, volunteers experience Brazil’s vibrant and colourful culture first-hand as they get to know the kids and staff at the project. Plus, there’s plenty of time for exploring fabulous Rio de Janeiro on this 4-12 week adventure. While some volunteers work at the project for five days a week, most people take Friday off to have a long weekend discovering Rio.
As the party capital of the world, there’s certainly plenty of fun to be had in this amazing city: from the samba parties that spring up at the weekend to the carefree atmosphere on Ipanema beach. Rio comes up trumps in its landscape too; lush mountains, tropical rainforests and spectacular beaches all clamour for visitors’ attention, presided over by the majestic statue of Christ the Redeemer, looking out over the city.
Sally Mitchell, 28, from Cornwall, who took part in a similar project in Rio, said: “My time in Rio de Janeiro was so rich and colourful, so much happened both on the project and in life outside the project that it’s almost impossible to single out the highlights.
“It’s an absolutely incredible city, full of contrasts and with very warm, welcoming people who are always ready for a laugh.”
Volunteers share rooms in one of three guesthouses perched on a hilltop with fantastic views out across the city. While there they have the dedicated support of i-to-i’s exuberant in-country coordinator, Felipe, who’s famous for doing his best to help volunteers make the most of their time in Brazil. i-to-i volunteers, as always, also enjoy 24 hour emergency support and free airport pickup.
This inspiring experience lasts four weeks, costing £1,095 (excl flights), but those who are seduced by Rio’s charms and want to stay for longer (up to 12 weeks) can do so for just £110 per extra week.
