Campfire is i-to-i's Travel community.
It is currently still in testing phase which could mean you find the odd bug!
Q: What is i-to-i campfire? A: It's the online community of the meaningful travel specialists i-to-i.com
Hiiii, I'm Helen and I am addicted to travelling!
I volunteered on Live with Lion Cubs on August 15th 2011 for two weeks, and it was the best thing I've ever done!
Now I'm booked onto Raising lions and tiger cubs for August 6th 2012 for 3 weeks and then hopefully staying a few extra days to do cage diving with great white sharks! :)
Very very happy that I'll be going back, I've fallen in love with South Africa!
(If anyone wants to add me on facebook, its the same name as above!)

Log in to leave a comment or Create an accountHi, actually.. i do have one more question - What we're the optional extra trips you were offered??
Hi Helen. Loving your pics. Looks like a fab trip, and one of many!!! Thanks for adding me. I am just getting into travelling - and have to say I totally loved my first travel adventure, and am getting inspiration from yours. Am already planning the next for next year. Keep up the good work. Jen x
Hey, thanks for the comment! I have booked to go on the turtle conservation in Costa Rica next June... Also involves surfing another one of my loves! I see you have done the Lion Cubs project, that also looks amazing! I am considering something along those lines for my next trip.. depending on how this one goes!! xx
Hi, glad to see you had a fab time, love the pic with Emma! Hope my advice was helpful! xx
Hi Helen, bet you're excited! It was the best experience I ever had!
The days are lovely like our summer (take good suncream), but nights are very cold like our winter. Buildings are designed to keep cool during their summer months so now in winter, they do not keep heat so take thick pj's!! Thick blankets are provided in the wardrobes. The worst of the cold may be over for you in Aug anyway. Also please bare in mind you will probably get scratched a lot by the playful cubs, so wearing shorts & vest tops weren't always ideal! Laundry is done for you so no need to take powder.
Best get shopping now in Primark or somewhere like that because you may not get a chance once there. There is the option of having a day in the local town if there are a few of you to make it worthwhile but it costs about £5 each and there isn't much there. For my 2 weeks I took £300 (about 3000R - African Rand). I came back with about £100 but if you're likely to spend most nights at the bar then £300 or maybe bit more is a good idea. There are opportunites (at very good prices) for trips - let me know if you want me to go into more detail on those.
On the lodge you'll be split into teams and work on a rota system to cover all duties such as cuddling and feeding cubs, helping to deal with visitors, cleaning enclosures, throwing dead chickens into enclosures for feeding, cutting meat, helping to wash dishes after your feeding time... you really will be involved in all aspects of caring for the lions and other animals over your 2 weeks.
Hope this helps, please let me know if there's anything I've missed that you want to know! x
Hi Helen!
You might want to have a chat with Diane who just got back from living with lion cubs in South Africa - jealous!

You may even be on the same flight as me if you have to change at heathrow! I'm flying with BA/Qantas.
Do you have any plans after the volunteering? This is the start of my big trip. After this I go to Australia, New Zealand and Thailand! Can't wait! But I have to save soooo much money!
