Hi! I've just signed up today. I'm doing community work with young children in Rio de Janeiro for 4 weeks from 05 September to 03 October 2009. I've never really gone travelling by myself so I'm a bit nervous but I think it'll be a great experience. It would be nice to speak to other people going to Rio de Janeiro especially if it's around the same time as me. :-) |

Greetings! Whether you are teaching English or helping out at a community work project in Rio de Janeiro, it is a FANTASTIC city that is full of life and colour and wonderful people, you will simply not want to leave! Felipe, the i-to-i coordinator has a heart of gold and Im sure you will hang out with him at Bar do Ze more than once. I wish I was still there now... |

It sounds amazing! How long were you there for? Bar do Ze? Today I've been thinking I'd give anything to be in Brazil right now! lol. |

I wish I was heading to Brazil in April. I still feel like a part of me is in Rio de Janeiro. I talk about my trip every day and I've been back for more than a month- still feels like yesterday and I would be back there in a flash if I had any more time off! Whoever is planning to go - YOU MUST, it is a fantastic destination and Felipe the in-country coordinator will take good care of you! |

Hey folks I'm heading out to Rio in the middle of August hopefully, for 5 weeks before going back to uni. Currently I'm sat at work - it's miserable outside - so I figured the best antidote is to plan for the summer! Give me a shout if you're going to be out there at a similar time, or if you've been and have knowledge to share Cheers x |

Hi, I 'm going to Rio in Jan 20010 (for 4 weeks) to work with children. Can anyone who has been there give me some tips. Would love to hear about it. It's my first placement so a bit nervous. I'm doing my research and it looks very interesting and colourful. Anyone going to be there at the same time and for Carnaval!

Hi everyone, (Oi, Como vai voce?) I will be in Rio 05 Sep 2009 - 03 Oct 2009 doing community work. Quick question - Is it quite easy/safe to travel around to projects? a lot of people have told me to be really careful when travelling around S.America.
Should be awesome, I have met a lot of Brasillians in NZ and they are so friendly! Have a safe journey Take care |

hi, Does anyone know how much money to take out there for 12 weeks, is it fairly cheap or expensive? The destination guide gives me an idea but im confused as to whether it is in Brazilian dollars or US dollars, any help would be great |

Hi Sagsi, I hope you are looking forward to your trip to Brazil! My colleague Andrea here in our Australian office has been there during carnival and absolutely loved it! Rio is such a great city, lively and always something to do. I guess there are a few things that you need to think of when you budget for your trip. First of all your food is not included during your time but Brazil is not expensive and you will be able to find some cheap food. We say that around US$50 per week should be ok to cover you for food – depending of course on what type of meals. Second thing to think of is that you need to budget as well for if you are going out with other volunteers that might be there at the same time as you (you can contact us to see how many people there are booked on). Local drinks are always more cheaper then international imports. Also you will spend much less money if you stick with beer then that you would drink spirits. My colleague says that for around 15 US dollars you could eat and drink cocktails…this is of course depends on which places you go to but our team in Rio can tell you everything about that (where to find these places) when you arrive Third thing to think of is how much you want to do in the weekends. Do you want to do some excursions outside the city etc. Do some research about this on the internet and also check out how much public transport will cost you. A really good website that I always look at is http://wikitravel.org/en, this is the travel version of Wikipedia so you might be able to find lots of information on here. Last thing you need to try to budget for is in case of an emergency, hopefully nothing will happen but you need to be prepared for if it does happen. We say budget around US$800 for emergencies such as hospital coverage etc. Most of the time your insurance company will pay for this but lately the patient need to pay first and then you can claim it back from the insurance. Lots and lots of things to think of and of course every person is different with how they spent money. You can make your trip as cheap or as expensive as you like. I hope this helps but if you have any further questions then just let us know! Cheers,

Hey Sagsy - Brazil is quite a bit cheaper than UK/Europe/US/AU etc - you can go out for a great feast at a Churrasceria (Brazilian mixed grill - best meats you'll ever have, all you can eat) for $10USD or thereabouts, including a few drinks. Felipe will surely show you in the direction of great local restaurants and how to get around. He will tell you each time a selection of meats comes out that 'this is the best meat!! and then no, no, this one is the best meat!!' :) You'll walk out of there stuffed! The metro is clean, cheap and safe and costs about $1.20USD for a ride, beers at the beach cost $1-2USD and you can just lay on the beach enjoying the sun and the guys selling them will come straight to you, you dont even have to lift your head :) They'll come to you selling icecream, or hot toasted cheese sticks, deelish! |
