Hiya... I'm very much single too! In fact, I booked my first big solo adventure after a horrible break-up with an ex (I should actually thank him really... ok, maybe not!) as a running away to clear my head type thing. There are so many other people travelling on their own that you'll always have people to talk to or travel with if you want to. Everyone on the travelling scene is very friendly and welcoming so just go for it! Something like i-to-i is a great place to start as there's people doing the same thing as you, also on their own, who are keen to make friends. With regards staying safe - just don't take any silly risks you wouldn't normally. You know the thing - dark alleys with strange men, no drugs, don't get so drunk you fall asleep in a gutter! Oh, and dress respectfully in countries where it's expected, or you'll get unwanted attention! Being single is a bonus when you're travelling, if you know what I mean... just stay safe ;) If you have the time, I'd really appreciate it if you'd check out my Ultimate Trip blog, and rate it using the stars at the end if you like it :)

Hey there, I totally agree. Travelling on your own is definitely the best way to do it! That way you can do exactly what you want, when you want! You'll also bump into the most amazing people, make great friends and you'll probably find you're a lot more independant than you thought! Go for it!! |

There are so many backpackers in aus (especially major cities) that you'll be meeting ppl as soon as you step in a hostel. And I know it's a cliche but here in aus, as long as tourists aren't snooty, we love em! So if you're set on heading to aus, what type of experience are you after? The cities? The surfy type lifestyle (a stereotype that doesnt really apply everywhere)? Or would you like to do some of outback australia? personally, i think the latter is most awesome. it's just humbling to see vast red deserts- the indigenous culture in aus is really something special.

Hi.
I'm also on a gap year, going to uni next year, and I'm planning to do parts of Africa, Australia and Asia. Although I'll be with tours/projects sometime, a lot of it will be on my own. It's a pretty daunting prospect, but i'm looking forward to the freedom I'll have. I say definitely go for it :)

hey, im doing my first solo trip to south america in a month and im so excited to have that kind of freedom! also if you stay in hostels and backpackers its ridiculously easy to meet people. secondly, pawlini has some great advice. im amazed at how many tourists come to australia but dont do central aus. i went on a trip a few years ago to uluru, the olgas, and kings canyon (not quite as spectacular as its namesake but DEFINATELY worth a visit) and it was amazing. check out the east coast, surfers paradise etc, but if u want a change of scenery head inland. |
