My parents are looking into renting a satellite phone or some other kind of phone so they can stay in touch with me while I am away. What do other people do? Is this recommended? The one they are looking into now need s to be used outside so there is a "direct line between the phone and the sky". Not sure how cumbersome that would be.. Any advice or suggestions are appreciated.

I am not leaving for another 6 months! I am off school/work (yeah, teacher) for winter break and am using the time to get things organized, so I'm getting really excited even though its a ways in the future.
