I am so pleased to get your response. Can't tell you how much it has helped as I don't personally know anyone who has done this i-to-i programme before and was really keen to talk to someone who'd been there. I am very excited and very encouraged by your report! I'm there on a work break too - 6 week placement. Great tips on classroom supplies to take - had heard they go nuts for the stickers. Plan to head to Siem Reap of course - and the beaches (will keep my lily white legs out of the sun, that sunburn of yours sounds drastic).
You say excuse your ramblings, but I could listen forever. So anything you care to write will be gratefully soaked up by me.
Here are a few questions, but only if you have time, truly:
Did you have much spare time during weekdays, or was it like full time work hours?
Did you enjoy hanging out in Phnom Penh?
Did you take your own computer? What is the internet situation?
What did you do in the evenings?
Had you ever taught TEFL before (I havent, am really looking forward to it but am a little nervous of course).
Thanks a bunch Rach,
Michelle
Hi!
Cambodia was AMAZING! So envious you have it all to look forward to!
I went for 5 weeks in March / April (it was the longest work would let me have!) Some of the volunteers combine a placement as part of a gap year but some like me - just did the placement.
There are approx 4 projects, I was at RiverKids which is based in one of the slums in PP, the kids are amazing, I took pencils and paper (these are like gold dust - hold on to yours or they will walk) I would also recomend stickers - the kids love to know when they are doing well and they love you to mark their work.
I was teaching 6-9 yr olds and the class was very big so I was paired up and we loved it! We had so much fun teaching weather, food, things in classroom, transport etc. Dont be afraid to repeat topics as the more practice they get the more will sink in!!
The Narin 2 Guesthouse is fine clean and basic and all the volunteers stick together which is nice. There are a couple of restaurants that I would recomend, Mama's and Bites which are both 30 secs from the guesthouse and really cheap too :-) Although the food at Narin 2 isnt bad at all if your having a quiet one!
I would defo suggest a trip one weekend to Siem Reap to see the temples as they are amazing! Also the stuff in PP like The Killing Fields.
Also go to Sihanoukville one weekend - this is the beach resort and is gorgeous! If you do go wear plenty of suncream - I went twice, on the first weekend I got 3rd degree burns on my legs and had to go to the hospital went I got back to PP - they were lovely - but defo not ideal and i couldnt teach for a couple of days as I couldnt walk and risk of infection etc anyway.
Im sure you will love it - sorry if Ive rambled on a bit -love talking about it so If theres anything else you would like to know - just let me know!
Take care
Rach
