reminiscing a year later

I can't believe it has been just over a year since I went to Rio de Janeiro. wow does time fly. As much as I told myself I'd be back to visit, I didnt make it happen (yet) but thank goodness, cause I've heard it is like 46C or so in the city at the moment, and just crazy busy. Id love to go to Rio de Janeiro again (as you know, hahaha) to do...

thinking about going back

i still talk about my trip every day, think about going back to Brazil every day... its fantastic that this buzz is with me in every cell in body! I just watched a video of the surf school at ipanema beach and it took me right back, I could almost feel the water lapping at my toes. I am going on the search for more volunteers that have been and taken photos.... I'm itching to...

Hola! I seem to be doing a similar journey which you say you´ve done before - Cusco to Buenos Aires. I have 3 weeks to get there - do you think it is fairly safe on the trains?

Hiya
Hope you don't mind but I'm shamelessly begging for votes (in 5th place right now!)

This competition literally means everything to me. I'm now truly beginning to discover who I am, and find the path I need to be on. Winning this trip of a lifetime, one that from a financial point of view I cannot ever really seeing myself being able to afford, would literally change my life, shake up my world and give me another perspective. I beg of you to vote for me more than any other competitor, because not only would I use up every single second of it to the nth degree and make the absolute most of it, I think it would make the most of me. A way to make new connections, spark new possibilities, and give light and hope. A trip to expand and explore, my location and my own mind. A trip. Of a lifetime. PLEASE VOTE FOR ME!

Hi Sonia! Have no fear, you are in good hands in Rio de Janeiro - Felipe is a wonderful coordinator and truly passionate about his country. Take ONLY WHAT YOU NEED and then even less. You can get anything you need in Rio de Janeiro including dangerous caipirhinas :)

ATM machines easy to come by. Best not to carry around lots of cash, take money out as you need it for a couple of days at a time even though you get charged withdrawal fees. You can use credit card to pay for anything in the shops. Better to be safe than sorry and dont keep it all in one spot. Make sure you put your cash away when you are in the bank rather than walking around on the street. Just carry with you what you need for the day, even best to carry camera etc in a plastic bag so it doesnt look attractive. Petty crime is opportunistic so the more local you act and feel, the less approachable you will be.

Brazilians are wonderful fun loving friendly and colourful people. Rio de Janeiro is an amazing city with beach culture like I have never seen before. Ipanema Beach and Copacabana beach are both awesome. There is amazing street art and the city is beautifully scenic. No need to be nervous, take it one day at a time and dont forget to stop and smell the roses. Cant wait to see some of your photos!

Have a safe trip & enjoy!

Hi Androyd,

I'm doing community work with young children in Rio de Janeiro for 4 weeks from 05 September to 03 October 2009. I'm really excited because I've always wanted to volunteer in Brazil with children and young people. I've never really gone travelling by myself so I'm a bit nervous and unprepared. Is there any advice you can give me about things like what to take? How much money? What Rio's like? I'd really appreciate any advice.

Sonia :-)

Sorry, i worded that wrong...i have found out where i will be accomodated and can read details about it when logged on to my account but was trying to find out more over the internet, without luck. I will be staying at Giovanni's and i just wondered if you know of this guesthouse or have heard any reviews on it at all?

:) Scoty

Hi again...

Do you no anything about the accomodation in Rio De Janeiro, as i cannot find anything to do with where im staying when i go?!? :(

Scoty :)
