Countdown is on for Ecology In Kenya

Just booked my first i-to-i tour, joy! A three week environmental conservation project near Mt Kenya, 16th July- 6th Aug 2011.

I've always been passionate about ecology and sustainaibility of natural resources, and the exotic setting and new culture to learn is a massive bonus!

Anyone who's done this tour, please let me know your experiences! After the project, I'm planning to stay in Nairobi for a week and then head down to the Maasai Mara NP for the annual wildebeest migration. So any feedback from these places is also very welcome!

I've been to Asia previously, but don't know how much or how little that will have prepared me for this. Can't wait to experience how different the culture, environment, food, language, architecture, lifestyle, etc. are! Getting thrown in the deep end is the joy of travel for me :)

Jambo Amy!

Hope you are ready to get your hands dirty as the work here is hands on, it's very interesting and involving all around.

The work involves collecting fertile soils from the forest i.e Mt. Kenya and seeds too if they can't be bought from the shops around, preparing the seed beds, watering, weeding, potting, transplanting among other conservation work.

The project was started with the main aim of protecting the vegetation and rivers in Mt.Kenya. This is after the members realized the hazards of tree destruction and the weather patterns in this area. You will get involved in the daily activities together with the local members who are very friendly and hospitable.

You will be staying at the Batian's View (this is an education and team building center) with hot showers and western toilets, although long drop toilets are also available and at the project.

Batian's view will provide Breakfast, dinner and accommodation. Lunch you will be sharing with the local members of the project at a cost of Kshs 150 (includes tea and lunch). Work starts at 9am and runs till 3pm.

Hope this gives you some insight of the project.

As for the safari Priscilla can help you sort out this while in the country, where you can join other volunteers or group and hence make it more enjoyable and cheaper. You will never go wrong with a trip to Masai Mara (also known as the 7th wonder of the world)

Thanks.
